“This photo brings back great memories of the 2nd Hook Scout & Guide Band taken around 1983-84. The scout master was Colin Sparks. It is Colin leading the band in this photo. He lived in Somerset Avenue and there were others who helped run the band. Both my two sons were in the band. My youngest son is one of the drummers to the left of the drum majorette. These photos were taken when they were marching in Alexandra Drive, Berrylands, Surbiton, so it may have been St George’s Day as the Royal British Legion is in Hollyfield Road. They, too, had a band which is still going today, and they march in the Lord Mayor’s Show every year. My eldest son still plays the trumpet in their band. We used to look forward to the band marching from the scout hut by King Edward’s Recreation ground down Hook Road to St Paul’s Church on a Sunday morning once a month.
“We were so lucky as families with young children living in Hook at that time as there was also the 1st Hook Scout & Guide Band who had their base in Verona Drive. There was so much for our children to keep them busy and involved in the local community.”
